This scroll from the Qing dynasty by DING Yunpeng depicts an elephant being washed. “Washing an elephant” is a common theme in Ming and Qing Buddhist paintings. It refers to shattering illusions and achieving inner peace since the Chinese words for “elephant” (象) and “illusion” (相) are homophones.
