Water & Ink : Tradition in the Contemporary Art
From September 1st to 20th, “Water and Ink: Tradition in the Contemporary Art” exhibition invites Chinese artists to communicate the relation between contemporary and traditional Chinese ink painting and their differences in visual languages through their works.
“Tradition in the Contemporary Art” is the theme of this exhibition, which is our latest session of the “Water + Ink” exhibition series. Chinese artists Zhang Jianjun, Li Xiuqin, Wang Nanming, Huang Guowu, Li Zhouwei, and Liu Yongtao are invited to communicate the relation between contemporary and traditional Chinese ink painting and their differences in visual languages through their works. All six artists have carried experiment on the transition from tradition to contemporary in the field of ink painting, such as from the perspective of calligraphy, installation, performance art, video, portrait painting, landscape and abstract, respectively. Since 2012, “Water + Ink” has been one of the directions of academic exploration of Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Arts Exposition, who displayed and shared with the public the leading study results in the area of contemporary ink painting through exhibitions and symposiums. The China Cultural Center in Brussels has provided strong support for this exhibition.
Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Arts Exposition
Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Arts Exposition is the only culture and art venue in China that showcases folk arts and cultures of nations and peoples all over the world. Integrating collection, display, cultural exchanges, research and social services, it is known for its international vision, quality exhibition projects, technological display methods and interactive projects. The museum’s appearance design is based on folk culture image “Chinese knot”. Opened on Oct 16, 2010, its floorage area is 14,600m². The museum is rated as China’s “National AAAA Tourist Attraction”, listed in the first batch of “National Public Cultural Service System Demonstration Project”, and also rated as “National Tourism Standardization Pilot Unit”, “Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection and Inheritance Base” and “Shanghai Scientific Education Base”.
