China was the first country in the world to discover, cultivate, process and use tea. More than 2000 years ago, it was already carried along silk and porcelain to other parts of the world via the Silk Road and by sea. It was at first a very fashionable beverage among the literati and refined scholars and due to its health benefits (tea is said to be very good for the prevention of diseases and fighting the ageing process), it gradually spread in the land. Nowadays tea drinking is a way of life, an essential part of Chinese culture.
On the south banks of the Hong River in the mountainous terrain of southern Yunnan live the Hani people, one of the 56 ethnic groups of China. They are cultivating rice on slopes of the Ailao Mountains, and have carved over the last 1,200 years the mountains into terraces, thus creating the very peculiar and fascinating landscape of the region. They have also created a complex farming and watering system to ensure that the terraces stay irrigated and that every farmer gets his fair share of water. The Hani people live in harmony with their environment and worship nature.
